Bento Box Baby Quilt

I'm currently working on a bento box quilt for a soon-to-arrive baby girl. I love the ease of making only twelve squares and getting to use such pretty pink fabric. I'm not a girly girl so I don't have much pink around my house, especially with all boys, but it's fun to see such feminine fabric touching each other every whichaway.

I varied the strip sizes just a bit because my original idea was to have a sort of fractured windowpane look. I like the idea of the soft, pretty fabrics being slightly mismatched and really defining the squares in the block. If I was keeping this quilt or giving it to one of my family members I'd sew it up in a minute.

Now my self-doubt is kicking in ..... I'm making this quilt for my boss's daughter and I don't know her or the rest of their family at all. Will everyone else get it or will they be fingering it and shaking their heads sadly over the seams?  Now I'm thinking I might change my layout to something different. Making a gift for someone I don't know is hard for me and I'm sure I'm thinking about it too much. Anyone have trouble making gifts? Part of my problem is that I think my quilts have feelings and I don't want them to be ostracized and banished to a closet never to see the light of day.

This is my first time linking up with Lily's Sew Fresh day and I realize I'm a day behind but this isn't a school project with a due date so I'm sure she won't dock me any points. Will you Lily??

  1. I think you should go with your gut. If you like the seams where they are, then there they should be. I find that if I love something then most others do too. In my opinion, if I receive a gift I appreciate it for what it is not for what I think may have been or could have been.

By the way it looks awesome.

  2. We are our own worst critics. Your blocks are beautifully made and I love the very thing that it has all those fabrics and that patchworkiness (new word?) to it. Keep on the way you are. It will be beautiful.

  3. I always have the same feelings about gifts too. I feel that they have to be absolutely perfect or someone will just spend their time critizing it. I realize that in actuality people don't do that, but I'm much harder on myself when making something for someone else. I think your blocks are gorgeous though and I'm sure it will be fabulous when it is all made up!!

  5. I have to say it looks fantastic in this layout!! Go with your originaly thoughts....they will love it and I promise they will not judge it as harshly as you! Besides, the quilter is the one that sees the flaws...not the person who doesn't quilt at all! And I hear you on the girly colors...not much at my house either. :)

  6. May I just say I l.o.v.e. all of your quilts, I think you should stitch it together the way it is. I would have a hard time giving this one away, prettiest bento box I've seen!!

  10. Hey they should and will be delighted with this gift. It is easy to tell if something is badly made and this beauty isn't - it's quality will shine through

  12. I have the same problem of agonizing over making something as a gift.

This quilt looks pretty nice if you ask me and I think that anyone would like it.

And thanks for suggesting that quilts have feelings. Now I'll forever be worried about the fate of each one that I make. Agh! ;)

  13. I have *tortured* myself over baby quilts, and in each and every case the recipient was super enthusiastic and appreciative. I think you'll find that people are just blown away by the fact that you have made them something for their new baby...and there's something special about a quilt, specifically. Just make the project you have been wanting/planning to make, give it with the best intenions, and then enjoy the reactions!!

And by the way, I think it looks *great*!

And I also want to thank you for the sweet comment on my blog (enchantedbobbin.blogspot.com). I am so touched to know that something I posted might be inspiring to someone out there -- thanks so much for sharing that ;)

  14. this is beautiful! i always have doubts when I give a quilt away. I, too, worry that it will be put away or given away or something like that. Then you give it to the person and they like go crazy over it. This is beautiful and I think they will "get it". :)
